What Is an SR-22?
An SR-22 isn’t a separate insurance policy. It’s a certificate from your insurance company that shows the Colorado DMV you carry at least the state minimum liability limits: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $15,000 for property damage. If the policy cancels, the insurance company notifies the DMV.
Who Needs an SR-22 in Colorado?
- Drivers with a DUI or DWAI
- Drivers caught driving without insurance, or in an at-fault crash while uninsured
- Drivers whose license was suspended or revoked and who need it reinstated
A points suspension usually requires proof of insurance, not an SR-22. Your DMV letter lists what your case needs.
How the SR-22 Process Works
- Buy a policy with an SR-22. Car owners need an owner policy. If you don’t own a car, a non-owner SR-22 policy may meet the requirement.
- Get your SR-22 to the DMV. Making sure the Colorado DMV receives your SR-22 is ultimately your responsibility. Many insurance companies file it for you as a courtesy; otherwise you can upload it in myDMV or mail it with your reinstatement application. We’ll tell you which applies.
- Finish your reinstatement. The DMV reinstatement fee is $95, or $120 with a DUI. Wait for your Letter of Clearance before you drive.
- Keep it active. Most Colorado drivers keep an SR-22 for 3 years. See how long you need an SR-22.
